Artist Awarded for West Cascade Sculpture

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs is excited to announce that Jonathan Imafidor has been awarded the West Cascade Sculpture public art commission. His sculpture reflects the legacy of the West Cascade neighborhood and the generations who reside there.

Jonathan Imafidor is an award-winning Nigerian-born, Atlanta-based artist whose practice bridges figurative representation with material-driven narratives of identity, history, and environmental consciousness.

Originally trained as a painter, he transitioned to sculpture during the COVID-19 pandemic, rekindling the inventive spirit of his childhood while drawing on the lived experiences of adulthood that deepened his engagement with repurposed materials.

His process honors the embedded histories of found objects, employing welding, casting, tying, riveting and painting to create deeply intentional, often monumental works. Jonathan’s public art projects span cities across the United States, Nigeria, and beyond.
