The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs has restored Through His Eyes, a sculpture by artist Ralph Helmick, located in John Wesley Dobbs Plaza.
This striking monument honors the legacy of civil rights leader John Wesley Dobbs. Drawing inspiration from the 12th-century Nigerian tradition of life-sculpture, the artwork features text and quotes inscribed on the interior of the mask, offering a unique perspective of Auburn Avenue—allowing visitors to quite literally see the world “through his eyes.”
Ralph Helmick, a formally trained sculptor, was selected for this project through CODA’s nationwide Call for Artists Initiative. The piece was originally installed for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, adding historical and cultural significance to the cityscape.
