Steffen Wolfgang George Thomas
1976
Copper, granite, limestone

This piece exhibits the expressionist style that artist Steffen Thomas enjoyed most. It was a winner of a 1976 Urban Design Commission award for excellence. Thomas’ female forms have been compared to Matisse but also have a particular German, cubist style. He worked in varied media and styles. German born, Thomas moved to the United States in 1930. He soon married Sara Douglass, a local Atlantan, after a six-week courtship, and they bought a 50 acre farm in Stone Mountain together where he built their home by hand. In 1973, Thomas moved back to Midtown, Atlanta and continued to work. He died in 1990, and his children and supporters helped start the Steffen Thomas Museum in Buckhead.
