Painted mild steel
A painted, abstract steel structure, the 15-foot tall installation consists of multiple shifting and winding curves. These curves are designed to evoke the fluidity of the human spirit. The red color of the artwork is meant to symbolize the love and passion that propels our spiritual change and growth.
Toby Martin is a sculptor with interest in engineering and metaphysics. Martin draws as much inspiration from science as he draws from Africa, and references the Dogon of Mali whose schematized sculptures date back to the thirteenth century and provide Martin with a spiritual link to anchor his work. Since 1987, Martin has been associate professor of art at Spelman College. He has received and executed commissions from many sources, including the Bureau of Cultural Affairs for the City of Atlanta; Environmental Sculpture for the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta; and the MARTA Rapid Transit Authority.
