This memorial was erected to honor pioneer women who helped settle Atlanta and to keep alive their traditions. The Atlanta Pioneer Women’s Society was originally organized in 1909. An upright granite slab features a bronze plaque on each face. One plaque is a relief of a woman sitting on a stool, threading wool from a spinning wheel. The other plaque bears a commemorative inscription with lists of names.

Artist Steffen Wolfgang George Thomas was an active sculptor in the south in the early- to mid-twentieth century. He was a German artist who settled in Atlanta in 1930. Thomas created public works for locations across Georgia. Another of his pieces,Trilon, is also in the Office of Cultural Affairs collection.
