J.D. Sims
Culture Club l JD Sims l Dance l Homework Assistance

The Culture Club at JD Sims is a continuing education style after School program that presents children with the opportunity to gain cultural enrichment in a small class environment. Our program provides children with homework assistance from After School All-Stars and dance instruction from Dance Canvas including Ballet, Jazz, and Capoeira. Both organizations are nationally recognized with outstanding staff.
When the students first arrive they are given a healthy snack and then split into two groups, one going to Dance and the other to Homework Assistance. This allows for individual attention while ensuring that every student gets to participate in classes regardless of skill level.
The Culture Club observes all Atlanta Public School Holidays and breaks. If you are interested in the signing up please contact Bryce Williams or Tyler Jonas at (404) 658-6023.
JD Sims
JD Sims Recreation and Community Center is located in Downtown Atlanta in the Old Fourth Ward District. It was established in 1984 under Mayor Maynard Jackson and has been used for various recreational activities. The center will now re-open under Mayor Kasim Reed in hopes of inspiring youth in the neighborhood and providing a place where they can study and participate in after school activates. Incorporated in the facility is a dance studio, computer lab, all purpose room, arts and crafts room, and kitchen.
Dance
Dance Canvas, a locally run dance company, teaches our dance program. Their "mission is to provide opportunities and venues to increase the appreciation of dance related arts throughout the Southeast." The children are exposed to several types of dancing styles including Ballet, Jazz, and Capoeira. "Dance Canvas was conceived and developed by Angela Harris, who serves as the Executive/Artistic Director and brings over 10 years of professional dance experience to the company. In 2007, she was hired to write the dance component curriculum for Grammy Award winning recording artist Usher's Camp New Look. Ms. Harris is an active member of Emerging Arts Leaders of Atlanta and has been a panelist for the city of Atlanta's Bureau of Cultural Affairs Dance Advisory Panel."
Homework Assistance

Each day the children receive an hour of homework help from the After-School All-Stars. Started in 1990, this program's goal is to help kids succeed in school and in life. With such Celebrity Ambassadors as Kobe Bryant and Chris Bosh, this national program will also help with test preparation and provide educational games for the children.
Intersession and Spring Break Camps
During intersession and spring breaks we offer full day camps that combined cultural activities with fun. In the past children have participated in dance classes, craft workshops, bowling, ice-skating, and many other activates (Below are pictures of just a few of these activities.)
As these dates approach we will send out letters of notification and have a sign-up sheet at the center.
