NIGHT. LIGHT. REFLECTIONS: VISIONS OF THE NEW SOUTH
an exhibit of photographs by John E. Dowell, Jr.
DATES: September 30 – November 5, 2010
OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, September 30, 6:00-9:00 PM
John Dowell presents a contemporary portrait of Atlanta’s nocturnal urban landscapes. This series is truly homage to the city’s unique combination of historic monuments and flashy modernism, so often overlooked. The photographs invite the viewer to question what is real: is it the glittering surfaces, or the reflections they present?
Dowell, a Professor of Printmaking in the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, has been a painter, print maker and photographer for almost 50 years. Drawn to Atlanta’s unique energy, Dowell says “During the last two years I have produced a portfolio of images that has captured and recorded the unique beauty of Atlanta Georgia at this moment in its vibrant history.”
The photographs are produced with a medium format, 4 X 5” film camera, and printed on an Epson 9600 inkjet Printer with archival pigmented inks. The large print size reveals an amazing amount of detail throughout the image—from the foreground all the way to the distant background. “My photographs typically are of nocturnal urban landscapes in which I try to reveal a city’s unique energy. I explore and play with the relationships of time and space, and of space as a manifestation of time, on a two dimensional plane. I try to create a sense of time’s passage, and work to capture that precise moment when the quality and textures of light place me and the viewer inside, outside, and in the reflection or shadow of an urban structure or space, “ says Dowell.
A selection of images from the 70-photograph series will be exhibited at the Gallery at Chastain Arts Center.
